Cloudehill is listed in Melways, map reference number P. 122 A9.
From the northern suburbs we are best approached along the Canterbury road, turn right up the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road at the Montrose roundabout, drive on to Olinda and turn left down the Olinda-Monbulk road. We are one minute down the road on the left hand side.
Alternatively, approaching from the southern suburbs, one can drive the length of the Burwood Highway or take the Ferntree Gully Road to the Burwood Highway. Drive under the railway bridge just past Upper Ferntree Gully, immediately turn left up the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, drive to Olinda and turn right down Olinda-Monbulk Road, again we are one minute along this road.
Other Attractions in the Dandenongs
The roads through the Dandenongs are highly scenic either with views over the city or across surrounding valleys to the mountains, and Sherbrooke's glorious mountain ash must be perhaps the finest tall tree forest in the world, yet all within an hour's drive of the heart of Melbourne.
Both the National Rhododendron Gardens and the glorious Pirianda Gardens, are within one minute's drive of Cloudehill and Kawarra Gardens, at Kalorama, grow an excellent collection of natives. Also with natives in a superb garden setting we have Katandra Gardens on the edge of the Yarra Valley in Wandin, and a little further along the Valley there is a garden of stunning aquatics, the Blue Lotus Waterlily and Lotus Farm. A number of private gardens are open by appointment including Marcia and Simon Begg's garden, Beechmont, Pat Hetrell's garden, Como, and Norma Berry's garden, Mernda Heights. (All these three gardens may be visited by groups, but only by previous arrangement. Ideally, this should be at least several weeks before visiting. Ring Cloudehill 97511009 for further information.)
Other nurseries of interest in the area include Conifer Gardens at Sassafras (conifer.com.au), Kuranga Native Nursery at Mt Evelyn (kuranga.com.au) and Yamina Rare Plants in Moores Road Monbulk (yaminacollectorsnursery.com.au).
The little shopping villages of Olinda, Sassafras and Mount Dandenong all lie within two or three minute's drive and there are very many bed and breakfasts.
There are, in fact, several B&Bs within walking distance including Ted Woolrich's lavishly restored house, Woolrich cottage, in the neighbouring Rangeview gardens (speak to Mary or Ches Mason on (03) 9751 0154, or check their website www.woolrichretreat.com.au). A little along our ridge to Chalet Road we have GraceHill (03 9751 1019) .Finally, in Olinda Village itself is Candlelight Cottages (03 9751 2464).
